Bahuri came to joke in US - Sahara reporters founder
Mr Omoyele Sowore, founder and publisher of Sahara Reporters on Monday commended President Muhammadu Buhari's visit to the United States of America (USA), saying 'Buhari's visit was significant in a lot of ways.'
Sowore made this statement on Monday while responding to questions from Nigerians at home and abroad through #MondayTango by HEDA Resource Centre, a Non-governmental organisation and Non-Partisan human rights and development league.
According to him @MBuhari 's visit to the United States, which is the first since inauguration, gave him (Buhari) an international platform to sell his agenda to the world.
"However, I am not sure that President @MBuhari left with any of his long list of items he'd expected to get from the US. A major reason was that he did not come with a team of ministers that could follow up on some of the discussions he started.
"For instance, a delegation that met with the US Attorney General without a Nigerian Minister of Justice could not gain much. @MBuhari did not say much at every meeting, beyond that his scheduled was packed. Too packed to achieve the desirable results.
"There was no doubt that US officials were excited to meet @MBuhari, to them he is like a rockstar," he said.
Sowore further stressed that it is not easily determinable to what extent the United states trust the Nigerian delegation: "Not sure that the US trust Nigerian civil servants on the delegation well enough to consider them "technocrats"."
The online publisher suggested that President Buhari (@MBuhari) needed to come up with a team that could inspire confidence, civil servants from the various ministries didn't do that.
Yet, he is convinced that Nigeria is back on track: "Perhaps better respected because of @MBuhari's perceived integrity. There is good perception," he maintained.
He also said that the Attorney General of US, Loretta Lynch, met with President Buhari during the visitation to discuss loot recovery but according to Sowore, 'those will require solid follow ups'.
Lamenting the situation of things at the National Assembly, Sowore lamenting: "There was no delegation from NASS on Buhari's trip, NASS is a mess right now."
He therefore advised that Nigeria must choose a credible attorney general to set the ball rolling on a number of bilateral legal issues especially loot recovery stating that Nigeria missed out on a number of opportunities because 'our last two Attorney Generals had terrible reputation internationally'.
Thus, the publisher warns that if the President fails to put credible people in his government, every bad act could be repeated and instituted.
