Oyo State Kidnap Victims Regain Freedom After 50days



Authorities in Nigeria have announced the rescue of the schoolchildren and teachers kidnapped by suspected bandits in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced the release on Friday in a post on his verified X account.

The Statement reads, “Finally, the kidnapped pupils and teachers in Orire, Oyo, have been freed by their abductors.

"In the course of the rescue operation, eight of the kidnappers were arrested and are now in DSS custody, while some of them were neutralised. There was no quid pro quo in the rescue, as one of the terrorists, a kingpin, who the kidnappers demanded his release, is being prosecuted for his atrocities. The security agencies will give a full account soon."

Further details surrounding the victims’ release were still unclear as of press time; however, the announcement brought relief to their families, residents and Nigerians generally who had awaited their safe return for over 50days.

Recall that the pupils and teachers were kidnapped in Orire in an attack that triggered widespread concern and renewed calls for improved security around schools and rural communities.

African Angle has now confirmed that the remaining victims have been released. However, authorities have yet to disclose the circumstances of their release or confirm whether any suspects have been arrested in connection with the abduction.

Further details are expected as investigations continue.
