Hernandez scores twice As Mexico Defeats Japan Javier Hernandez scored two headers and missed a stoppage time penalty as Mexico notched a 2-1 consolation win over Japan which sent their opponents home pointless from the Confederations Cup on Saturday. Both teams had already been eliminated after losing their opening two Group A matches but the win may ease the pressures lightly on Mexico coach Jose Manuel de la Torre, whose team have also been unimpressive in the World Cup qualifiers. Hernandez, who scored all three of Mexico's goals at the tournament, put his side ahead in the 54th minute when he met Andres Guardado's cross with a perfectly timed run and placed his header past Eiji Kawashima. He struck again 12 minutes later from close range after Hiram Mier flicked on a corner at the near post. Shinji Okazaki tapped in with four minutes left to give Japan some hope of claiming their first point, but Mexico should have restored their two-goal lead when they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Hernandez. The striker was guilty of a double miss as his kick was saved by Kawashima and he then hit the crossbar from the rebound. Mexico deserved the win overall with Guardado also hitting the post with a flying header five minutes before halftime.

All Hail Neymar As Brazil Defeats Italy Neymar and a brace from Fred gave Brazil a well-deserved 4-2 victory over Italy Saturday night and enabled them to preserve their 100 per cent record in the Confederations Cup. With Neymar in sparkling form and Fred always dangerous in front of goal, Brazil were the better team for most of a Group A match they never looked like losing. With both sides already through to the semi finals of the WorldCup warm-up, Italy coach Cesare Prandelli made five changes from the team that started against Japan in Recife three days ago and opted to pack the midfield. Even when the home side only needed a point to qualify in first place, they were the hungrier side from kick off. Brazil almost took the lead in the first minute when Hulk forced Gianluigi Buffon to get down smartly to turn his shot round the post. New Barcelona signing Neymar should have done better than blaze wide after Oscar set him up with a lovely flick in 24th minute and he was unlucky to see one shot blocked after a lovely back heel and one-two on the edge of the box a few moments later. It was Neymar again who was involved in the opening goal right on halftime. His in-swinging free kick from the left was headed goal bound by Fred and when Buffon could only parry it out, Dante was on hand to side foot the ball home. Italy grabbed an equaliser six minutes into the second period and it was Mario Balotelli who played a key role. His sublime back heeled flick put Emanuele Giaccherini free and he hammered his angled drive past Julio Cesar. Their lead did not last long, however. Four minutes later Neymar won a dubious free kick right on the edge of the box and he took the kick himself, curlinga perfect shot into the top corner of the net past a helpless Buffon. Fred increased Brazil's lead in the 66th minute when he latched onto along ball from Marcelo and held off a defender before smashing the ball into the roof of the net from six metres. Italy were down but not out and they snatched a goal back in the 71st minute. The Brazilian defence failed to clear a corner and the ball fell to Giorgio Chiellini, who fired home despite Brazil protests that the referee had already blown for a foul on Balotelli. Fred put a more accurate sheen on the result when he scored a fourth just a minute from time. Buffon was unable to hold a Marcelo shot and the striker was on hand to slot home. The win was Brazil's 10th successive Confederations Cup victory and the team's fourth in a row under coach Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Keshi Learns from The Good and Bad of Nigeria As He Faces Spain Tomorrow. Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi believes he has seen "the good, the bad and the ugly" of his team during their opening two Confederations Cup matches, providing plenty of valuable information for the future. Speaking before their final Group B match against Spain at the Estadio Castelao, the affable Keshi said the experience had proved invaluable for the African champions even if they are eliminated on Sunday. "Yes I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly sides of my team and seen enough to help me take the team to the next level. I have learnt a lot and am very happy to be here playing against quality sides," he told reporters. Nigeria, who beat Oceania champions Tahiti 6-1 in their opener before losing 2-1 to South American champions Uruguay on Thursday, must defeat Spain and end their unbeaten 24-match run to have any realistic chance of reaching the semi-finals. However, even a win may not be enough if Uruguay run up a huge score against amateurs Tahiti as expected. After the Spanish hammered Tahiti 10-0 and Uruguay beat Nigeria, the dice seem loaded in favour of world and European champions Spain and Uruguay going through to the last four. But even if Nigeria go out as looks likely, Keshi will go home much the wiser as he prepares for a World Cup qualifier against Malawi in September which will decide which team goes through to the final round of African qualifiers. "I have seen our level of professionalism and have seen our concentration, our level of preparedness before and after, and during the games," he said. "I have looked at my coaches and seen how they react with the players and have looked at the other teams as well. We do have a young team here, but these players have the heart and the quality to play and anything can happen when it is 11 against 11." Asked if his team mates were scared of playing Spain, who were last beaten in a competitive match when they lost their opener to Switzerland in the World Cup in South Africa three years ago, Nigeria captain and goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama bristled with indignation. "I am sorry to say this to you, but I do not think there is one single player in our team who is scared," he said. "The clubs in Spain might be bigger, but we are proud of our league and we are proud to wear our colours. We are not afraid of Spain, but we respect them. Thank You." Keshi responded: "Of course they are a good team, they are the world and European champions but we are also a good team and we are the African champions, and we are proud to represent our continent. a great continent, so have some respect for us at least." Nigeria beat Spain in their only previous senior meeting, scoring a 3-2 victory in the group stage of the 1998 World Cup in France. "Spain had a great team then with players like Raul and Kiko and Andoni Zubizarreta and they have a great team now. However, it is obvious that Football is more scientific now. "It is harder today, but that victory had a great impact in Nigeria at the time and we will be looking to beat them again tomorrow,"added Keshi.
